Tomato Upma Recipe is a quick and healthy savory dish made using semolina (suji/rava) and tomatoes. It is soft with the crunchy bite of chana dal and urad dal, very flavourful because of curry leaves, Semolina cooks very quickly thus semolina recipes are always quick and easy. Apart from that is a very healthy ingredient and is easy on the belly. Upma recipe is served with green coriander chutney or coconut chutney. Tomato Upma recipe calls for

Recipe using semolina (rava)- I have roasted semolina. You may use roasted semolina too. That would make it even quicker recipe.
Other ingredients- A lot of ingredients are added that makes tomato upma very flavourful. These include curry leaves, dals, cashews, green chilli etc. Onions have also been added. You can omit them if you want. I have used ghee as I love the flavour of ghee when combined with semolina. You can use oil.

How to make Tomato Upma Recipe

1. Dry roast 1/2 cup semolina

2. Stir and cook till rava become fragrant and starts to look dry

3. Heat 1 tbsp ghee. Add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp black gram (urad dal), 1/2 tsp chana dal. Cook till fragnant

4. Add 10-12 cashew halves

5. Stir till it becomes golden brown

6. Now add chopped 1 onion, 1 slit green chilli and 12-15 curry leaves

7. Stir and cook for 2-3 minutes, till the onions turn translucent

8. Add 1/2 tsp red chilli powder and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder

9. Mix well and cook for 1-2 minutes

10. Add 3/4 cup chopped tomatoes

11. Mix tomatoes and add salt according to your taste

12. Cover it with lid and cook till tomatoes become soft

13. Uncover it and see tomatoes become soft

14. Add grated ginger

15. Add 1 ¼ cup water

16. When water starts to simmer, add roasted rava (suji)

17. Stir continuously till it becomes thick

18. Cover it with lid and cook for only 1-2 minutes

20. Garnish with chopped coriander and finish with 1 tsp ghee and mix well
