What is Masala Toast?

Masala toast is a crisp and spicy toast loaded with vegetables. Masala toast recipe can be prepared with a few ingredients. It is mildly spiced and makes a good breakfast or tea time snack option. The tempering of cumin seeds and curry leaves add flavors to it. It is a healthy toast recipe and doesn’t call for boiled potatoes, cheese, etc.

Following are the ingredients for Masala Toast Recipe

Bread: You can use the bread of your choice. I have used white bread to make masala toast.

Onion and tomatoes: Basic tempering of cumin seeds and curry leaves along with onions and tomatoes form the base for masala toast.

Vegetables: I have used cabbage, carrot, and capsicum to make the masala toast. You can add the veggies of your choice.

Spices and flavors: Basic spices i.e. salt and red chili powder have been used. Little tomato ketchup is added which gives binding as well as enhances the taste of masala toast.

How to make Masala Toast?

1.This recipe makes 4 masala toasts.

2.In a cooking pan heat 1 tbsp of oil. Add ½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera) and a sprig of curry leaves (kadi patta). Let these splutter.

3.Next add 1 chopped onion. Cook till it sweats.

4.Add 1 chopped tomato with little salt. Cover and cook till the oil oozes and the tomato becomes mushy.

5.Next goes in the chopped veggies i.e. ½ cup of chopped cabbage, 2 tbsp of chopped capsicum and 2 tbsp of thickly grated carrot.

6.Also add the spices i.e. salt to taste and ½ tsp of red chili powder.

7.Cook till the vegetables become soft. Add 1 tbsp of tomato ketchup. Mix well and keep aside.

8.Heat a skillet or griller pan. Drizzle little oil. Toast bread slices till crisp.

9.Apply butter on the slices.

10.Spread the prepared vegetable masala on the slices.

11.Carefully put on the skillet with the masala side downwards.

12.Even more carefully flip and cook from the other side too. If you wish you can only cook from the bottom as the masala is already cooked.
