Let’s talk about Chocolate Mug Cake Recipe
I was never tempted to make a microwave cake. I believed a microwave would not do justice to the cake batter. But then kids! For them you often do things you don’t believe in like making a mug cake in the microwave.
After deciding what to make, comes next question – HOW? How to make it?
Internet often answers this one and this time what I had was a “multiple choice answer”. The internet is full of eggless mug cake recipes, some using curd other using condensed milk and so on.
I have archived lots of eggless chocolate mug cake recipes. I could have easily shortlisted them but the mug cakes are so simple and huss-free to make that I am in a mood to try many recipes. I am glad that the first I tried turned out great. This one is from a YouTube channel bhavna’skitchen.
The recipe calls for choco chips. We (me and Amy), forgot to add it to the batter so we garnished the cake with a handful of choco chips and this was a blessing in disguise. It turned out to be delicious because the choco chips melted a little and made the cake tastier. You can add them to the cake batter. Or do both!
The recipe calls for brown sugar but you can substitute it for regular sugar.

Mug cakes are very easy and quick to make. You will see my daughter Amy doing most of the job of making this cake.
It was absolutely moist and chocolaty.
The tricky part about this cake
I always believe that the simple recipes are tough to ruin. This one too is simple but after all it’s a cake. You don’t need special talents to ruin cakes. Anyone and everyone can do it.
Mug cakes, when don’t turn right might-
- Become dry
- Overflow from the mug
- Get over cooked
- Get a rubbery texture
Experience and experiments (tips and tricks)
- Do not over mix the batter. Mix till just combined.
- Do not fill the mug more than half.
- Once everything is done, add a tsp of water on the batter before popping it inside the microwave.
- Start checking the cake after the shortest cooking time.
- Do not over-cook the cake. If it’s not done when you first check it, microwave it for 10 more seconds and check and repeat.
- To ensure the doneness carefully touch the top of the cake. It shouldn’t be gooey. In case of mug cakes also toothpick is blessed to have the first bite(kachcha or pakka). You know what I mean!! Basically you can do the toothpick test to check if the cake is done?
- Try oil based recipes instead of butter based ones. If using butter, use melted butter.

Why did this happen? Because its not so that we made the cake and clicked the pictures and over and out. No. Rather we make this cake again and again! And every time we are tempted to take more pictures. And that’s why you see different mugs.
Eggless Chocolate Mug Cake Recipe
INGREDIENTS FOR MUG CAKE
- 1/4 cup maida all purpose flour
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/8 tsp Baking powder
- 1 pinch baking soda
- 1 tbsp yoghurt
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp + 1 tsp water or as needed
- Handful of choco chips
HOW TO MAKE MUG CAKE
Take a microwave friendly mug. I know you people are smart, I shouldn’t have mentioned this but please don’t give me that look. Add 1/4 cup maida (all purpose flour).
To this add 1 tbsp cocoa powder.
Add 1/8 tsp baking powder.
Add 2 tbsp brown sugar.
Add one pinch of baking soda.
Mix the dry ingredients.
Add 2 tbsp oil.
Add 1 tbsp yogurt and ½ tsp vanilla extract.
Add 2 tbsp water. (You can add add 2 tbsp choco chips. I added them after the cake was ready.)
Mix till combined. Check the consistency. We do not want a thick batter. Add more water if required.
Add 1 tsp water on the cake batter.
Microwave the cake for 1.5 minute. Check the doneness. If not done microwave for 10 seconds more each time.
Once done, garnish with handful of choco chips and indulge.
Serve mug cake with milk mug and please your kids.
I make it every time Amy is craving for something chocolaty.
Children need our presence, much more than they need our presents…
