What is Dal Dhokli Recipe?

Dal dhokli is a one pot meal comprising of whole wheat dumplings in flavourful dal. It is a comfort food for many. Dal dhokli in prepared in Gujarat as well as Rajasthan. This is the recipe for Rajasthani dal dhokli. Dal dhokli gives a delicious break from the regular dal roti. Dal dhokli can be served for lunch or light dinner. Dal Dhokli Recipe:

Ingredients:

For Dhokli:

  • 1/2 cup wheat flour (aata)
  • 2 tbsp gram flour (besan)
  • 1 tsp clarified butter (ghee)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (or as per taste)
  • 1/4 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 1/4 cup water or as much required

For dal:

  • 1/2 cup (arhar dal), washed and soaked for an hour
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2-3 tbsp ghee
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 dry red chilli
  • 7-8 curry leaves
  • 2 green chilli chopped
  • 1 finely chopped tomatoes
  • 3/4 tsp red chillli powder
  • Handful of chopped coriander leaves
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Ghee for garnishing

Instructions:

1. To pressure cook dal: In a pressure cooker add 1/2 cup arhar dal, 2 cups water, salt to taste and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder. And cook for 1 whistle. Let the pressure release on its own
2. To make dhokli: In a mixing bowl add 1/2 cup wheat flour, 2 tbsp gram flour,1 tsp ghee, 1/4 tsp salt (according to taste) and 1/4 tsp carom seeds
3. Mix well
4. Knead dough by adding water gradually. Keep it aside for 10-15 minutes
5. Heat a fry pan and add 2-3 tbsp ghee
6. Add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds and let them crackle them
7. Add one pinch asafetida
8. Add dry red chilli
9. Add 7-8 curry leaves
10. Add 1 chopped green chilli and 1 chopped tomato
11. Cover it with lid
12. Cook till tomatoes turn soft
13. And ghee oozes out
14. Add 3/4 tsp red chilli powder
15. Cook for 30 seconds
16. Open pressure cooker and check dal
17. Add tempering in cooked dal. Keep aside
18. Once dough has rested for 15-20 minutes, knead it once
19. Take a portion and dust little flour
20. Roll into a thick chapati
21. Cut as per desired shape and size
22. Take 2 cups water in a vessel and allow it to boil
23. Now place Dhokli in it
24. Cook for 10-15 minutes
25. Add boiled dhokli in dal
26. Simmer for 10-12 miutes
27. Add juice of 1/2 lemon
