Chana Dal cooked and spiced up with red chili powder, black pepper, green chilies; popped up with tamarind paste and dry mango powder and topped with chopped onions and fresh coriander leaves are chana dal. It has a thick consistency. This is basically chana dal made in Sindhi style, and served with pakwaan but can be served with chapattis or parathas too.
Chana Dal should be soaked before cooking. It is cooked till soft but not mushy. Tamarind paste is added for the kick. Other than that dry mango powder is also added. For the bite, chopped onions, green chilies, and coriander leaves are added.

1. To cook chana dal, take 1 cup soaked dal in pressure cooker. Add 2 cups of water. Add in salt to taste and ½ tsp turmeric powder.
2. Cook for 7-9 minutes on low flame after 1 whistle on high flame. Let the pressure release. Open the pressure cooker.
3. Add in 2 tbsp tamarind paste.
4. Put cooked dal in serving bowls. Sprinkle spices i.e. red chili powder, coriander seeds powder, dry mango powder, black pepper powder. Add 2 tbsp chopped onion and 1 chopped green chili.
5. Heat 2 tbsp oil.
6. Once the oil is hot, super hot, pour on the dal.
7. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and chopped onions. Bon appétit!
